Drug Information
How Effective Is Emergency Contraception?
Provided you follow the instructions, plan B is:
- 95% effective within 24 hours of unprotected sex
- 85% effective between 25 and 48 hours
- and 58% effective between 49 and 72 hours.
If more than 72 hours have passed since you had unprotected sex, or your contraceptive failed, the IUD (intrauterine device) is a method of emergency contraception that can be used within 120 hours of unprotected sex and is almost 100% effective. Talk to your doctor or nurse to learn more about the IUD.
If plan B Fails Will It Harm the Baby?
If the pill fails, there is no evidence that plan B will harm the developing fetus. Emergency contraception will not work once a fertilized egg has attached itself to the womb lining, so if you already have a confirmed pregnancy, you should not use it.
If I'm Already Pregnant When I Take plan B, Will It Harm the Baby?
Plan B will not work if you already have a confirmed pregnancy. However, if you are pregnant and have already taken the pill, there's no evidence that plan B will harm the fetus.
Is plan B Safe?
plan B is the only medication in Canada approved as an emergency contraceptive by Health Canada. It was approved for sale in February 2000, and since then, thousands of women have taken it. plan B, under different names, is available in more than 100 countries around the world.
You should not use plan B if you have a confirmed pregnancy, have unexplained vaginal bleeding, or are allergic to the ingredients in the pills.

If you're taking any other medication, have known or suspected cancer of the breast, have active liver disease or tumour, have diabetes, you're currently ill, or you have a long-term medical condition, be sure to tell your pharmacist, doctor or health clinic (your CLSC in Quebec) before taking plan B, and ask them what to do next.
There are some medications that may interact with plan B and reduce its effectiveness. You should always tell your pharmacist or doctor if you're taking any other medicine or herbal remedies. However, there are no published drug interaction studies of Levonorgestrel.
Could I Have a Severe Reaction to Emergency Contraceptive Pills?
